The End of The Planning Stage

This week has been very exciting for me indeed! Starting this blog, the related twitter and the book has been very thrilling, and it’s only been made even better by this little planning strategy I came across in a wonderful book called Save The Cat! by Blake Snyder. But more on that in a second.

If you know me you’ll know how much I adore – and I mean adore – organising things. I was one of those weird kids who could spent a whole afternoon doing nothing but rearranging all the stationary on and inside her desk and I’d feel very grown-up and so organised doing it! (tell me I’m not the only one?) I’ve never really grown out of that strange little hobby, which was all the more reason why the planning strategy decribed in Save The Cat! appeals to me so very much.

I read through his books on my lunch breaks at work, taking notes here and there, and then I got to the fun bit! Organisation, you say? Easily rearranging ideas, you say? Colourcoding, you say? I was sold when my eyes spotted the word colourcoding. If you’re me it’s a magic word.

I won’t go into the details since that’s what his wonderful book is for, but it’s entirely designed to help people organise their screenplay and get their act together. Since it’s not a screenplay I’m writing but a book my Board looks a little different, but I’m having immense fun with it nontheless. And my mind is now focused on the writing ahead!

So here is my version of the Board, in its early stages from earlier this week.

Board1

"Why are you doing this when you could be spending time with me? Pay attention to me, human!"
“Why are you doing this when you could be spending time with me? Pay attention to me, human!”

Such fun, guys! Such fun!

It’s looking much busier by now but the early-days version is less likely to spoil things for anyone opening it up, so this is all you get! πŸ™‚

  1. I’m a helpless organiser, too! I know so many writers who just go ahead and wing it, it’s nice to know there are other planners out there! Ooooh, colour coding …

    • Going ahead and winging it is exactly what I did when I wrote my first book, and that was a disaster! I know it works for some people, but it definitely doesn’t for me. And it’s nice to know I’m not the only one easily pulled in by colour coding! πŸ™‚

  2. […] expect when I started planning my book – or only a few weeks ago, when I presented my board! It has already come a long way with some exciting twists and turns here and there, and I am beyond […]

  3. I’m such a planner I’ve not finished anything yet! Being organised helps with self discipline though, and that really is the bit I get tuck on! So thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Glad you’ve started the writing stage! Even my blog posts spend time.. Too much time sometimes in the draft & planning phase…
