Weekly Quote #16 – A Poem!

Today I thought I’d try something a little different. Instead of the usual short quote I’d like to share my favourite poem by William Earnest Henley with you. I first came across this many years ago in a Psychology magazine, and it has stuck with me ever since. At one point I even knew the whole thing by heart! Invictus gave me the motivation and strength to do what I want with my life, and to keep going no matter how hard things get. I’m not sure why I haven’t shared this with you sooner but here you go now! 🙂 Enjoy! (this is supposed to be in four stanzas but for some reason WordPress won’t recognise my line breaks, so you’ll have to imagine them 🙁 )

“Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

      For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the master of my fate,

I am the captain of my soul.”
