642 – Shadow Hunter

I really enjoyed writing this one. I wasn’t sure where the prompt would take me when I started writing but it turned out a very fun exercise!

As always, feel free to borrow this prompt if it speaks to you. If you do please link back here, I’d love to see your interpretation!

The next sound you hear and what caused it

I froze when the silence finally broke.

Heavy footsteps, like someone dragging something heavy, slumped up the stairs. Desperate not to give away my location I held my hands to my lips, knowing it’d do me no good. If I screamed I’d be dead, there was no way it wasn’t gonna hear me.

If only Dee was here. He’d have known what to do, but the last I’d seen of him were his feet ana trail of blood as it had dragged him out of the kitchen.

We had been prepared to die. It had taken this situation for me to realise how stupid that vow had been. If Dee was still alive I was sure he’d regret it, too.

Like everyone else in this town I’d thought that being a Shadow Hunter would be – well, not fun, exactly, but right. The Shadows had reached us and torn through town like a horde of mad demons. I had sworn to kill them, but I was trapped and the others were all dead.

Outside the heavy footsteps came to a stop. I held my breath as I prepared myself for it to strike.

  1. Oh wow, very spooky… I don’t want you to stop there.
Did you get my email with my ideas scribbled on?

    • Maybe one day, but right now I’ve got no plans for it 🙂
I did! I’m sorry I haven’t had a chance to reply yet. You sent me quite a lot so I want to have enough time to read over it properly, rather than just skim it 🙂 I’m hoping to have some time this week, if the edit allows it.

      • That’s ok, there’s no rush. I just wanted to make sure you got it. I hope the dit is going well for you 🙂

      • It is, thank you. It feels like it’s going slowly but I should have enough time this week to be ready to call for beta readers by the end of next week 🙂 Unless I just jinxed it. I don’t know how things will go if I jinxed it.

  2. kay kay

Mysterious and exciting. You’re really good with suspense!

  3. I’m far more fascinated by the title rather then the prompt to be honest. Then again, I’ve also been watching the new Shadowhunter series.
However, this sounds like it’d be a really good short story as well.

    • There are a lot of prompts in that book, I’m sure you’ll find one eventually that speaks to you 🙂 I had no idea there was a TV show by the same name!
Thank you! I don’t think I’ll take it further, although it could always become part of something else… 😉

      • That’s true it could. Yeah, instead of making another mortal instruments movie, they made a TV show

  4. Loved this little short you produced. Do
Enjoy reading writing and look Forward to the next post 🙂

    • Thank you!! I’m a little behind on the next post since editing has taken up so much of my time, so next Monday could be interesting 🙂

  5. A gripping story! I love these little shorts. They are such perfect showcases of your talent! I always look forward to seeing what you produce next 🙂

    • Thank you!! I’m ashamed to say I haven’t got anything for the next Monday yet! I might have to improvise a little.

      • Don’t worry. I’ve fallen a little silent on my own blog, only because I’ve been trying to double-down on my WIP. There’s nothing wrong with missing a post 🙂 Of course, if inspiration strikes, I would never say no to a story 😉

  6. No lie, I was looking over my shoulder as I read this. Such a spooky tale, that gripped me from the beginning and didn’t let go. Awesome job!

    • Thank you, what a great compliment! <3 I don't write spooky things often enough, haha, horror stories aren't really my thing!
