But What Do YOU Want? – Sci-Fi Edition!

Late last year I asked you all a question – What do you expect from a fantasy novel? What do you want from a fantasy novel?

The responses were fantastic and encouraging (and far more detailed than expected), and since I’m now at the very beginning of plotting my first sci-fi novel – a genre I haven’t read anywhere near as much as I’ve read fantasy – I thought I’d ask again!

So, to all you readers and writers of sci-fi! What do you expect when you pick up a sci-fi novel? What do you want to see, and what do you really not want to see? What would immediately spoil the experience for you, and what would make it great?

Please share your wisdom with me in the comments. Pull up a beanbag, grab a cookie, and let’s talk sci-fi!

  1. I’d love to see futuristic events play out in earth. I cannot say I am put off by much in this genre but like the idea of time travelling. I’ll have a better think and let you know πŸ™‚

  2. A good question. I’m not much of one for sci-fi. It’s just not something I ever gravitated towards.
I love Ender’s Game, though. It’s definitely one of my favourite books of all time. I love the whole set-up and the human heart at its center. But that’s something I look for in every book. I guess a good sci-fi for me is one that explores new worlds, new planets.
