642 – Wind Chimes

Today’s prompt is a continuation from last week’s prompt, Red Grass. It’s not necessary to have read Red Grass to understand this one, but if you’d like to read it anyway or refresh your memory go ahead!

I didn’t take this one literally and had my character act on my behalf, as you’ll see ๐Ÿ˜‰

As always, if the prompt speaks to you feel free to borrow it. If you do please link back here so I can have a look at your interpretation!

Go outside and notice three distinct sounds. Remove the labels and describe exactly what they sound like. Then write a story incorporating the sounds.

Something urged me to get a move on. I had hidden in this strange cave with emerald glowing veins and golden shimmering grass for long enough. I was starving, and I needed a shower.

I still had no idea where I was, but at least if I was going insane my mind was doing a gob of it.

A bird sang. It was a lovely melody, a happy chirp, which reminded me of the birds back home but which was too different to be compared. I didn’t exactly know my birds, but I had spent enough time outside to recognise their distinctive voices. This song was new to me, and it filled every part of me with elation and hope.

The chirping was accompanied by a- a- what was that? It sounded like wing chimes, but there were no buildings nearby and the nearest tree was too far away.ย I took a few uncertain steps into the red grass, and the sound grew louder. Stunned I realised that the music came from the grass. The breeze had rung the chimes before, but now that my legs brushed against the high blades it was louder.

I stood and listened for a second before I realised what the third thing I could hear was.

It was silence. There were no cars, no people, no planes. The noise of technology and constant chatter was absent, and it was the most peaceful sound I’d ever heard.

I had wanted to go home, but now I wasn’t so sure. If this was heaven or insanity, it wasn’t so bad. If this was an alien world, I hoped humans would never find it.

  1. I love your narration and you took me away to a beautiful place. I was taken away to this unique land and when I returned I was left breathless. Amazing feat in so few words. Thank you for sharing

  2. I love this continuation. What an absolutely beautiful idea. The vivid description drew me right in. I don’t think I would mind getting lost in such a place either. You have such a brilliant imagination and every time I read one of your stories, I feel welcomed to discover a part of it it. And it is enchanting!
