642 – Gossip

Monday Inspiration

It’s Monday (booo!) and that means it’s time for another writing prompt! If you need some motivation to defeat the Monday Blues, perhaps this can help 🙂

As always, if the prompt speaks to you feel free to use it. If you do, please link back here so I can be nosy and read your interpretation 😉

***

Write a story that starts with a piece of gossip.

“Rose is one of them! Didn’t you hear? Be careful now, or she’ll make it so you can’t have children!”

Oh, how things have changed. That was the last time I saw Deborah Hunt. 9th grade, thick make-up, flawless hair. Army of loyal, self-obsessed minions. I was one of the quiet, studious kids. Naturally, we didn’t talk much.

Do you ever look back on your high school years and wish you could do it all over again? Me neither. But I do miss some of it. The sky being a pale blue. The birds singing everywhere I went. Fear being something you saw on TV, but didn’t experience yourself.

Now the sky was a strange mixture of gold, green and red, and fear was that awkward neighbour everyone knew but no one wanted to talk about. It was always there, watching. Even the birds only whispered in hushed tones.

I always thought that, if magic were real, we wouldn’t be able to handle it. I was right – magic suddenly appeared, and it split the world. There were those who worshipped it, those who had it, and those who feared it. I had it, and because we weren’t ready for it I was running from those who were scared of it.

Deborah Hunt had it, too. Seeing her now, across the road, bleeding heavily from one thigh, I was torn between helping her and walking the other way. So I took a few steps into the other direction, stopped- and went back to help her. She wouldn’t live long if I didn’t.

No one else would help her if I didn’t.

  1. I really liked it! Great job 🙂

  2. A world where magic suddenly appears- I like it!

    • I’ve played with that general idea several times and it’s sticking with me… Now, if I didn’t already have 3 WsIP I might have done something more with it, but I think it needs to wait 🙂

      • At least you know you have a waiting list of ideas 🙂

        • That I definitely do 😀 It’s called The Trunk and lives on my memory stick.

  3. I wonder if you don’t have access to some magic of your own, the way you create such intriguing premises and deliver with such beautiful prose! As always, it’s a joy to discover your writing – no matter how small!
